For thought is a bird of space, that in a cage of words may indeed unfold its wings but cannot fly.

Edison of India

Why weren't we taught about this great man in our social studies at school?

Gopalaswamy Doraiswamy Naidu, popularly known as G.D. Naidu (23 March 1893–4 January 1974), was a pioneering Indian inventor and engineer, often called the "Edison of India" and "the wealth creator of Coimbatore."

He is celebrated for manufacturing India’s first electric motor and made significant contributions across various domains, including electrical, mechanical, and automobile engineering, as well as agricultural innovations in hybrid cultivation.

I came to know about him when I learnt from an ongoing project that a boy from a village near Coimbatore would travel to his college in a bus that had an automated ticket dispenser—in the 1960's! This was because the bus belonged to Mr. Naidu's company.

Here is a documentary on him.
